Urban Ecosystem-Level Biomimicry and Regenerative Design: Linking Ecosystem Functioning and Urban Built Environments

چکیده

By 2050, 68% of the world’s population will likely live in cities. Human settlements depend on resources, benefits, and services from ecosystems, but they also tend to deplete ecosystem health. To address this situation, a new urban design planning approach is emerging. Based regenerative design, ecosystem-level biomimicry, theories, it proposes designing projects that reconnect space natural ecosystems regenerate whole socio-ecosystems, contributing health production. In paper, we review as models for recent research We examine two illustrative case studies using approach: Lavasa Hill India Lloyd Crossing U.S.A. With increasing conceptualisation application, argue contributes positive impacts socio-ecosystems enables scale jumping practices at scale. However, biomimicry create impact still lack crucial integrated knowledge functioning productions, making less effective than potentially could be. identify gaps where further needed pose relevant questions make approaches aiming more effective.

Biomimetic Urban Design: Ecosystem Service Provision of Water and Energy

This paper presents an ecosystem biomimicry methodology for urban design called ecosystem service analysis. Ecosystem services analysis can provide quantifiable goals for urban ecological regeneration that are determined by site specific ecology and climate of an urban area. This is important given the large negative environmental impact that most cities currently have on ecosystems. If cities ...

Linking stoichiometric homoeostasis with ecosystem structure, functioning and stability.

Ecosystem structure, functioning and stability have been a focus of ecological and environmental sciences during the past two decades. The mechanisms underlying their relationship, however, are not well understood. Based on comprehensive studies in Inner Mongolia grassland, here we show that species-level stoichiometric homoeostasis was consistently positively correlated with dominance and stab...

Linking community size structure and ecosystem functioning using metabolic theory.

Understanding how biogeochemical cycles relate to the structure of ecological communities is a central research question in ecology. Here we approach this problem by focusing on body size, which is an easily measured species trait that has a pervasive influence on multiple aspects of community structure and ecosystem functioning. We test the predictions of a model derived from metabolic theory ...

Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning

Species diversity is a major determinant of ecosystem productivity, stability, invasibility, and nutrient dynamics. Hundreds of studies spanning terrestrial, aquatic, and marine ecosystems show that high-diversity mixtures are approximately twice as productive as monocultures of the same species and that this difference increases through time. These impacts of higher diversity have multiple cau...

Applying Ecosystem Management to Urban Forestry

During the 1990s, the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service shifted from commodity production management to ecosystem-based management (Overbay, 1992). Although definitions of ecosystem-based mana-gement vary by objectives, the principle had four primary elements: (1) maintaining viable populations of native species, (2) representing native ecosystems across their range of natu...
